Morocco - Marrakech to Fès

Some highlights of our whirlwind 3-day trip from near Marrakech to Fès:

  1. Watching the incredible variation in the Moroccan landscape, from snow-capped mountains to rocky desert, and cool oases to rolling sand dunes.

  2. Counting how many people can be fitted into a vehicle (at least 26 for an ancient Ford Transit van, at least 8 for a similarly ancient Peugeot station wagon).

  3. Staying overnight in real-live-Sahara-type sand dunes at Erg Chebbi, after getting there on camels.

  4. Walking through cedar forest with Barbary 'apes' (actually macaques).

  5. Straining our necks to see the walls of steep gorges (especially the Todra Gorge and Dades Gorge) and other amazing geological formations.

  6. Marveling at local lycra lizards sweating it up to high passes (and admiring the views from the top without having had to work so hard to get there).

  7. Looking over vast palmeraires – date palm-dominated oases – snaking along valleys and gorges that cut through otherwise bone dry landscapes.

  8. Trying to pick the line between red, crumbling kasbahs and the red, crumbling mountains in which they’re built.

  9. Picking and eating mulberries off the tree, just like at Maldon (discovered that white mulberries have no flavour).

  10. Just watching how locals live life.

And: being driven. That is, not driving ourselves. Brahim, our driver, was a star!
