Some highlights of our whirlwind 3-day trip from near Marrakech to Fès:- Watching the incredible variation in the Moroccan landscape, from snow-capped mountains to rocky desert, and cool oases to rolling sand dunes.
- Counting how many people can be fitted into a vehicle (at least 26 for an ancient Ford Transit van, at least 8 for a similarly ancient Peugeot station wagon).
- Staying overnight in real-live-Sahara-type sand dunes at Erg Chebbi, after getting there on camels.
- Walking through cedar forest with Barbary 'apes' (actually macaques).
- Straining our necks to see the walls of steep gorges (especially the Todra Gorge and Dades Gorge) and other amazing geological formations.
- Marveling at local lycra lizards sweating it up to high passes (and admiring the views from the top without having had to work so hard to get there).
- Looking over vast palmeraires – date palm-dominated oases – snaking along valleys and gorges that cut through otherwise bone dry landscapes.
- Trying to pick the line between red, crumbling kasbahs and the red, crumbling mountains in which they’re built.
- Picking and eating mulberries off the tree, just like at Maldon (discovered that white mulberries have no flavour).
- Just watching how locals live life.

And: being driven. That is, not driving ourselves. Brahim, our driver, was a star!
